Sodium Tripolyphosphate - Versatile Detergent Component and Food Preservative
Sodium Tripolyphosphate, Food grade, Kosher (STPP_M)

    Sodium Tripolyphosphate (Food Grade, Kosher)

Sodium tripolyphosphate, also known as sodium triphosphate or STPP, is mainly consumed as a component of commercial detergents. It serves as a builder or water softener, particularly in hard water containing high concentrations of magnesium and calcium ions. In such conditions, detergents can be deactivated. However, STPP, being a highly charged chelating agent, tightly binds to calcium and magnesium ions, preventing their interference with sulfonate detergent performance.

STPP is not only used in detergents but also serves as a preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds. In the food industry, it is commonly known as E451 and finds usage as an emulsifier and moisture retainer. Many governments regulate the quantities allowed in foods, as STPP can substantially increase the sale weight of seafood. The United States Food and Drug Administration recognizes STPP as "generally recognized as safe."

Sodium tripolyphosphate is available in low density, medium density, and high-density granular powders. The specific product being described here is a medium density variant. It is categorized as food (FCC) grade, granular, medium density, and Kosher-certified. Besides its primary uses in water softening and as a sequestering agent, STPP can also function as a peptizing or deflocculating agent. Furthermore, it has applications in detergents, soaps, and ceramics.

The chemical structure of sodium tripolyphosphate is [Na5P3O10]n. It is also known by synonyms such as sodium triphosphate, triphosphoric acid pentasodium salt, sodium phosphate tripoly, STPP, pentasodium triphosphate, and pentasodium tripolyphosphate. The product is packaged in 50-lb bags by the original manufacturer, while smaller quantities are repacked for laboratory, research, and industrial uses. The CAS number for sodium tripolyphosphate is [7758-29-4][Na5O10P3]n.

Sodium tripolyphosphate exhibits low toxicity, making it a safe choice for various applications.

    Key Features:

    • Effective detergent component and water softener
    • Chelating agent that prevents interference with sulfonate detergents
    • Preservative for seafood, meats, poultry, and animal feeds
    • Emulsifier and moisture retainer in food production
    • Regulatory compliance and recognized as safe by FDA

    EDTA00_LL.jpg
    Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (EDTA) (EDTA00)

    Ethylenediaminetetraacetic Acid (EDTA)

Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) is a white odorless crystalline powder used as chelating agent in pulp & paper, cleaning, chemical processing, agriculture and water treatment.

Acid EDTA also known as edetic acid, is an aminopolycarboxylic acid with the formula [CH2N(CH2CO2H)2]2. This white, water-soluble solid is widely used to bind to iron (Fe2+/Fe3+) and calcium ions (Ca2+), forming water-soluble complexes even at neutral pH. It is thus used to dissolve Fe- and Ca-containing scale as well as to deliver iron ions under conditions where its oxides are insoluble.

In Textiles and paper industry, EDTA is mainly used to sequester (bind or confine) metal ions in aqueous solution. In the textile industry, it prevents metal ion impurities from modifying colors of dyed products. In the pulp and paper industry, EDTA inhibits the ability of metal ions, especially Mn2+, from catalyzing the disproportionation of hydrogen peroxide, which is used in bleaching.

EDTA is added to some food as a preservative or stabilizer to prevent catalytic oxidative discoloration, which is catalyzed by metal ions.

EDTA can solubilize Fe3+ ions at or below near neutral pH. This property is useful in agriculture including hydroponics. However, given the pH dependence of ligand formation, EDTA is not helpful for improving iron solubility in above neutral soils. Otherwise, at near-neutral pH and above, iron(III) forms insoluble salts, which are less bioavailable to susceptible plant species.

EDTA is used extensively in the analysis of blood. It is an anticoagulant for blood samples for CBC/FBCs, where the EDTA chelates the calcium present in the blood specimen, arresting the coagulation process and preserving blood cell morphology.

In shampoos, cleaners, and other personal care products, EDTA salts are used as a sequestering agent to improve their stability in air.

    Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, HEC 250, Natrosol™ 250 (HEC250HHBR)

    Hydroxyethyl Cellulose HEC 250 HHBR

HEC (Hydroxyethylcellulose) is a thickener for water based products. The HEC allows you to modify rheology and build pleasing textures in shampoos, conditioners, body washes, hair colorants, creams and lotions, skin cleansers and many more.

This grade of HEC with designation 250 HHBR offer delayed hydration and superior resistance to biological and chemical degradation. A 1% preparation of HEC250 in water results a viscosity of about 3400 up to 5500 cps.

It is an off-white powder that is dispersed and dissolved in cold or hot water, to produce solutions of varying viscosities. Chemically, it is cellulose of short to very long chain that has been etherified to hydroxyethyl ether to achieve an optimum balance of properties. HEC250 is used as a viscosity and rheology modifier, protective colloid, water retention agent, stabilizer and suspending agent, particularly in those applications where a nonionic material is desired.

For cold or room temperature preparation a continuous stirring of at least 30 minutes is recommended to get a consistent and homogeneous viscosity.

    Other properties are as follows:

Moisture content as packed, 5% Max

pH of solution: 6 up to 8.5

Particle size: Passes U.S. Mesh 325

    Uses/ Applications:

HEC250HHBR hydroxyethylcellulose is a granular powder that dissolves in water to give clear smooth solutions, which exhibit a pseudoplastic flow behavior. At neutral pH and ambient temperature, it disperses in water without lump formation and provides easy dissolution. These solutions are unaffected by high concentration of soluble salts. Viscosity is little affected by mild acids and alkalies. Because of its nonionic character HEC has wide compatibility with other materials, such as emulsion polymers, natural and synthetic gums, emulsifiers, defoamers.

HEC is used as high efficiency nonionic thickener, water retension aid and rheology modifier in all types of water based paints and surface coatings, and in a variety of other aqueous industrial products.  HEC250HHBR offers additional feature of superior storage stability when used under conditions that enhance microbial growth.

As a protective colloid and stabilizer HEC performs outstandingly in the emulsion and suspension polymerization of many vinyl polymers. Its unique combination of properties explains its use in pigment dispersion and in tile adhesives.

    Regulatory Status:

HEC is in compliance with the requirements of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use in adhesives, resinous and polymeric coatings employed on food-contact surfaces of metal, paper or paperboard articles, and other suitable substances intended for use in food packaging as specified in the Code of Federal Regulations, Title 21, Sections 175.105, 175.300, 176.180, 177.1210. and 182.99.

How to Make a Material Shiny Using Graphite Powder

Achieve a stunning, professional-looking shine on various materials with this step-by-step guide using graphite powder. Perfect for props, cosplay, and DIY enthusiasts!

    Step 1: Clean the Surface

Begin by thoroughly cleaning the surface of the material you want to make shiny. Use a mild detergent and water to remove any dirt, grease, or debris. Rinse the material with clean water and allow it to dry completely. For best results, lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper to ensure it's smooth.

Step 2: Apply a Base Coat

Choose a suitable base coat paint for your material (e.g., primer or base paint). The base coat helps the graphite powder adhere better and enhances the final finish. Apply an even layer of the base coat using a brush or spray. Ensure full coverage and allow it to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions.

    Step 3: Apply Graphite Powder

Once the base coat is dry, it's time to apply the graphite powder. You can use a soft brush, sponge, or even your fingers for this step. Gently rub the graphite powder onto the surface in a circular motion. Ensure even coverage and work the powder into all the nooks and crannies. For a more intense shine, apply multiple thin layers, buffing the surface between each layer with a soft cloth.

Step 4: Buff to a Shine

After applying the graphite powder, use a soft, lint-free cloth to buff the surface. This will enhance the shine and give it a smooth, polished look. Continue buffing until you achieve the desired level of shine.

    Step 5: Seal the Finish

To protect the shiny finish and ensure its durability, apply a clear sealant or topcoat. Choose a sealant compatible with your base coat and material. Apply the sealant in a thin, even layer using a brush or spray. Allow it to dry completely according to the manufacturer's instructions. For extra protection, consider applying a second coat of sealant.

    Final Tips

    • Work in a well-ventilated area and use protective gear such as gloves and a mask to avoid inhaling graphite dust.
    • Test the process on a small, inconspicuous area of your material first to ensure compatibility and desired results.

By following these steps, you can achieve a professional-looking, shiny finish using graphite powder on various materials, perfect for props, cosplay, and other creative projects.
