Properties: White deliquescent solid in the form of tiny white pellets or flakes. Absorbs water and carbon dioxide from the air. Soluble in water, alcohol, glycerol; slightly soluble in ether.
Hazards: Toxic by ingestion and inhalation; strong caustic; handle with gloves or tongs; corrosive to tissue.
Common Uses: Commonly used in making soaps and detergents. Also used as an electrolyte in alkaline storage batteries and some fuel cells, for making liquid fertilizers, herbicides, and as a paint remover.
